Elmore Park Middle
School Band
2005-2006
Guidelines
Welcome! Successful bands are not built with negatives that begin with
“don’t” or “things not allowed.” Great
bands are created by positive attitudes from students eager to learn and willing
to give their best at all times. This
handbook is for students and their parents with hope of giving information
regarding the various phases, activities, policies, and regulations of the
instrumental music program.
Band probably requires more time
outside the school day from more students than any other school activity. Band members are also the students who are
most often the high achievers, learn how to manage time, found on the school
Academic and Citizenship Honor Rolls, and who grow into well-adjusted young adults. It is also true that few, if any, other
activities are more richly rewarding in satisfaction which can only come from a
job well done.
All band members and parents are urged
to read these guidelines carefully at the beginning of each school year. The ultimate goal of following policies,
guidelines, and rules are to help create a successful young musician, and thus,
a great band program. Therefore, a form
was also sent home with each student for you to sign. By signing this handbook acknowledgment form, you are stating
that you have read and understand the E.P.M.S. Band guidelines. This acknowledgement form serves as a
contract between the band director, the student, and the parent(s)/guardian(s)
regarding the expectations and requirements of the Elmore Park Middle School
Band. Please sign and return the handbook contract form by Friday, September
9th. Finally, please refer
to the E.P.M.S. Handbook online throughout the year.
I look forward to working with you and your children. Please call if you have any questions or there is anything I can ever do for you. You may call Elmore Park Middle School at 373-2642. Please leave a message and I will return your call at my earliest convenience.
Keep
making music,

Park Middle School
THE ELMORE
PARK BAND STUDENT
FEES are necessary to financially
support our band program. The Elmore
Park Middle School Band Booster annual budget is funded in great part by band
fees. Music for concert selections cost
$75 to $100 per arrangement, materials/equipment, and instruments for the band
is also an expense. (Band fees do not
cover items outside of the annual budget, i.e.: band trips, Solo & Ensemble fees, All-West fees, etc.) Our only active fundraisers are dances and possible
coupon book sales. Fees are due by
Tuesday, September 20th.
Please make checks payable to the Elmore Park Band Boosters. ALL MONEY SHOULD BE SENT IN A SEALED
ENVELOPE WITH THE NAME ON THE OUTSIDE, ALONG WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE PAYMENT. Fees are as follows:
Sixth Grade: $ 30 (does NOT include T-shirt)
T-shirt fee ($15)
*Send
a note to the director if you need assistance with fees. *
Seventh and Eighth Grade: $ 35
(does NOT include T-shirt)
T-shirt fee ($15)
Uniform pants fee ($20-$35 per student) *Read the uniform section for
details*
Certain band shoes and gloves
*Send a note to the director
if you need assistance with fees. *
COMMUNICATION between the director and
parents is vital to the success of our program. To aid in this, each band member is asked to turn in his or
her parent or guardian emails on each of the forms. Any parent or guardian without email will be sent hard copies of
emails with the student. Band
calendars and other pertinent information are posted on the band website at www.elmoreparkband.org. Band calendars are also sent home monthly
with the student.
Sixth Grade: Standard for Excellence, Book 1 (for your instrument)
Seventh Grade: Standard
for Excellence, Book 2 (for your instrument)
Eighth Grade: Standard for Excellence, Book 2
(for your instrument)
* Possibly book 3 for second
semester *
QUALITY INSTRUMENTS – ALL STUDENTS MUST
HAVE THEIR NAME CLEARLY MARKED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THEIR INSTRUMENT CASES AT ALL
TIMES! It is recommended that the best
possible instrument be purchased or rented.
This will help prevent learner frustration, prevent technical problems,
and allow a young student to produce a superior sound. PLEASE consult the band director or a
private teacher before buying a new or used instrument. Shelby County Schools does provide some
instruments such as tuba, baritone, and French horn. However, these can be few in number, and are generally spoken for
by advanced band students. We want
every child who wants to be in band to have the opportunity! Contact the director if you would like more
information.
QUALITY EQUIPMENT – All clarinet and saxophone
players must have FOUR (oboe
players, two) good playing reeds with them at all rehearsals and
performances. Percussionists should
always throw away broken or warped sticks.
Proper technique is impossible when using damaged equipment.
1. Shelby County School and EPMS rules must be followed by band
members at all band-related functions.
Classroom rules will be posted in the band room. The director will review and explain
classroom rules with students on the first day of school.
2. Rehearsals – Each band member should be ready to play at the time designated by
the director. MEMBERS MUST BRING INSTRUMENTS IN GOOD PLAYING CONDITION, ALL
MUSIC (INCLUDING BOOKS), A PENCIL, AND ANY OTHER ITEMS LIKE FLAGS, ETC. TO EVERY
BAND REHEARSAL. A signed parent
note must be presented for each day an instrument is actually in the shop. Only 2 repair notes are accepted per nine
week period (a note per class period without the instrument). Band members are expected to attend all
rehearsals, including those after school when they are involved in that ensemble
or class. Remember: POSITIVE AND
PRODUCTIVE REHEARSALS CAN RESULT IN GREAT PERFORMANCES!
3. Performances – All band members are IMPORTANT to the success of our
band program. Therefore, attendance is vital to all
performances. The fall and Spring
Concerts are REQUIRED performances for ALL band members. All Marching Band and Honor Band
performances (including those above mentioned concerts, and all competitions,
and festivals) are required for those students participating in these
ensembles. Members are to be attentive,
punctual, and orderly at all activities.
Requests for absence from a
performance should be presented by the band parent (in writing or in person)
and in advance. The director shall approve the absence at her discretion including
personal illness (doctor’s note required), death or illness in the immediate
family, or an event that produced a severe hardship on the student or
immediate family (lack of transportation is not accepted as an excuse). An
unexcused absence will affect the student’s grade (lower the grade) in band and
will affect the semester grade.
4. Instruments are to be properly oiled, cleaned, and in good playing condition at the
BEGINNING of each rehearsal and performance.
Please take care of routine maintenance BEFORE class/rehearsal
begins. Any repairs should be taken
care of immediately. Also, students are
NOT allowed to open other students’ cases or play another student’s instrument
AT ALL. This will be strictly enforced!
5. Practice is required from every band member. Daily practice at home is a
band student’s “homework” and should be a minimum of twenty-five minutes per
day. (Beginners begin with
fifteen minutes and work up to twenty-five)
Choose a time period that does not interfere with any other work
activity, so that you may focus on your instrument and music. Always practice for results and
accuracy. Remember: it’s not the length of time you practice, it
is what you get accomplished in the time period that produces results. Pop
quizzes can be given to the students during class covering their assigned
homework including songs from the method books, concert music, scales, and
more. ALL STUDENTS MUST
practice DAILY to be successful in band!
*NOTE TO PARENTS – Certain band instruments are not allowed on school buses, i.e.: tubas,
baritones, etc. Please arrange to take home larger instruments at least on weekends or if possible, every day.
6. Music is the responsibility of the student.
All students are issued an individual copy of each piece currently being
rehearsed. The cost is $1 per page
(goes to the band boosters) to replace lost music. When music is not in use, it is to be kept with the student. Music not stored properly or left in the
band room will be discarded, whether the name is present or not. Only keep music in your case, if there is a
place for it.
7. Uniforms - Each Marching Band member
(seventh and eighth graders only) and/or Honor Band member will be issued a
uniform top with a hat. This year we will be fitting uniforms
again. This year we will have a company
fit EVERY individual 7th and 8th grade band student for
pants. There will be a $20-$35
UNIFORM PANTS FEE PER 7th & 8th GRADE BAND STUDENT. However, these pants will arrive to school
with the student’s name on them and arrive already hemmed to your
student’s height. You will NOT have to
worry about hemming the pants! Finally,
these pants will be BRAND NEW without any old stains, wear & tear, and will
be YOUR student’s pants for the rest of their years in the Elmore Park Band.
This is a continuing uniform procedure that we think will continue to be
successful in fitting each individual student more accurately, provide a more
“crisp” look for the band, and make the students more comfortable in their
uniform pants. If a student loses
their pants, they will have to pay the pants fee again to replace their lost
pair of pants. The uniform top will be
taken home and will be returned with a minimal dry-cleaning fee. The uniform pants fee will be finalized and
announced when uniform fittings begin in late September or early October.
EACH STUDENT WILL BE REQUIRED TO PAY THE
DRY-CLEANING FEE IN MAY. Therefore, the
band will see to it that the uniforms are cleaned. The complete uniform will be worn for all Marching Band and Honor
Band performances unless noted otherwise.
All students will stay in complete uniform following a
performance until the director indicates otherwise. Each member is expected to return the uniform in the condition it
was issued (with allowance for normal wear) and is financially responsible for any repairs or replacement. Parents will be sent home care instruction
for the uniform at the time it is issued.
Please return the uniform with the DRY CLEANING FEE by the deadline
issued at the end of the year. EVERY
STUDENT MUST PAY THE FEE REGARDLESS IF THEY ALREADY HAD THE UNIFORM CLEANED.
Band T-shirts are NOT included in the band
fees for any of the band students this year.
The students will vote on the
band shirts and the T-shirt cost will be $15 per student, depending on their
choice. Band T-shirts will be worn
under the uniform. The Band T-shirt
will be worn AS THE UNIFORM with blue jeans for certain performances including
the sixth graders’ performance at the Spring Concert. Extra lettering, airbrushing, etc. will not be added until after
the school year closes. Please do not
lose the band shirts. If a band shirt
is lost, the student will have to pay the same price to replace the shirt. However, many times we do NOT have any extra
shirts so please make every attempt to have the student keep up with their
shirts and keep them clean.
Each Marching Band and Honor Band
member must own a pair of SOLID WHITE LACE-UP shoes. These may be vinyl or leather.
Check local department stores or area music stores. In past years, students’ shoes have not
always fit into the specified guidelines.
Matching shoes make the band look more “polished” or “crisp.” Do NOT
purchase shoes until you have received more specific instructions from the
director regarding what type of shoe, etc.
All shoes must be approved at least one week in advance, prior to the
first marching performance. Examples of
the preferred shoes will be available in the band room. If the shoe does NOT match the band’s
guidelines, you will be asked to replace the shoes with a new pair meeting the
band’s criteria. Students are
responsible for polishing their shoes (at home) before each performance. All Marching Band members (except
percussion) must also own a pair of solid white gloves (clarinets cut the tips
of glove fingers off).
8. The Band Room should be kept neat at all times. Therefore, EATING, DRINKING, and CHEWING gum
is not allowed and will be strictly enforced.
Personal items including books, book bags, shoes, etc. should not be
left in the band room overnight. They
may be left during the day on band days.
Students are NOT allowed to open other students’ cases or play another
student’s instrument AT ALL.
9. Riding in buses: All Shelby county School
rules and consequences apply on field trips, as in the classroom. We are representing our school, parents, and
our band program on performance trips. Trips are a privilege…not a right, and are
part of the culminating reward of hard work. YOUR BEST BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDE IS EXPECTED AT ALL TIMES! Students will ride the bus designated by the
announced bus list. When taking a trip,
students load in the order designated by the director. All band members will ride the bus to and
from the performance. Roll will be called just before departure with everyone
seated and quiet. Just before the
destination is reached, everyone will remain quiet as the director and bus
driver discuss final directions.
No one will leave his or her seat until permission
is given. Students shall remain seated
at all times. ALL BUS RULES APPLY!
No food or drink is allowed on the
buses unless otherwise indicated.
Students are expected to load and unload all of their equipment and are
responsible for it during the trip. All
percussionists will help load and unload the percussion equipment.
While on the bus, students will
speak in a normal speaking voice at all times.
Noise will be kept at a minimum.
Singing, shouting, shouting from the windows is forbidden. Place no portion of the body outside the
window at any time.
PDA (public display of affection)
will not be tolerated at any time during a band event.
Do not play any instrument on the
bus. Do not drum on the seats, hats, or
any non-percussion item. Sticks and
mallets will be stored in the stick cases during transport.
ALWAYS BE POLITE AND COURTEOUS TO
OTHER BANDS!! Negative comments about
other bands are forbidden. If you can’t
say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.
Misconduct in any of the above
mentioned forms (including pushing, shoving, fighting) can result in the
student(s) being banned from further trips.
It is the duty of the chaperones to report any misconduct on the bus.
The band does not take a trip unless accompanied by chaperones. Because the band director cannot be in a position to supervise at all times and locations, the success of the program relies heavily on the presence of good chaperones.
Chaperones should be active and
assume responsibility. They should not
hesitate to stop any practices that seem questionable, out of place, or
definitely wrong. The following are
examples of activities that will not be tolerated:
-rowdiness
-vandalism
-wearing uniform improperly
-leaving bus or assembly area
without permission
-exchanging buses
-PDA – keep your hands to yourself
-anything that might reflect
negatively on the reputation of the band program.
The
band program is designed to be inclusive to the middle school student. The student
may be active or just meet the minimum performance and rehearsal
requirements. For all band students,
good performances at the Holiday and Spring Concerts are the basic required
events. HOWEVER, ALL STUDENTS WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MARCHING BAND AND
HONOR BANDS.
Marching Band is a fall activity that
consists of students performing at 2 parades possibly including the Veteran’s
Day Parade (in early November in downtown Memphis) and one or two holiday
parades including the Bartlett Christmas Parade (second Saturday evening in
December). All events require a lot of
hard work, but are a lot of fun. This
activity is open to all 7th and 8th grade band students,
and 6th grade band students who have a minimum of one-year
experience on their instrument.
Generally, 7th and 8th graders are EXPECTED and
STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to participate in Marching Band unless extenuating
circumstances exist. Please see the
director with any questions.
All Marching Band brass, woodwind, and percussion
students will perform all parade music from memory in mid to late October. Flag members and the Field Commander will
correctly perform all music on their respective instruments non-memorized (they
have routines to memorize) due at the same time. Each band student will individually perform his/her music from
memory. Marching band students should
show the discipline and ability to march in correct formation
using proper marching fundamentals.
Flag and Drum Major
Auditions are
usually held in September for the marching season. Dates for these auditions will be announced as the new school
year continues to settle just a bit.
Only 7th and 8th graders are eligible to audition
for guard and drum major. Auditions for
the 2005-2006 guard and drum major may be scheduled late in September.
Honor Band is the ensemble which
performs/competes in the local W.T.S.B.O.A. Concert Festival (weekday in
March), Tour of Schools and possibly another performance. The Honor Band rehearses every Monday,
Tuesday, and Thursday after school beginning at mid January. Honor Band music is competition level music
and requires an extra level of commitment from students. This ensemble is open, by audition, to all
seventh and eighth grade students, and sixth grade students who have a minimum
of one-year experience studying their instrument. Audition requirements will be
based on scales including the chromatic and major scales, and music to be
specified at a later date.
Marching Band and Honor Band
Rehearsals will
be AFTER SCHOOL THIS YEAR ON TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS from 4:00-5:15pm. Some rehearsals may be held before school on
days of field trips, on Mondays as needed, etc. The Honor Band will meet on Mondays too during the second
semester due to the number of spring holidays, TCAP testing, and other
conflicts with our usual practice times.
As with performances, excused absences from these after school
rehearsals will only be granted with a written excuse at the band
director’s discretion. If a student is
well enough to attend school, then they are expected to stay for
rehearsal. The director recognizes that
transportation can be a challenge, however, that is not an excuse for missing
rehearsal. Please check with neighbors
and band friends for transportation needs.
Also, LATE PICK-UPS WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT BE
TOLERATED. All students MUST be picked up within 5-10 minutes after any band
rehearsal. If a student is late
being picked up, they will receive one warning for the entire semester. If there are any additional late pick-ups,
the student will NOT be permitted to participate in any future band
extracurricular activities, including after school practices. Please understand that time is precious
to EVERY student, EVERY parent, and EVERY teacher. We are all very busy and must be mindful of any inconvenience
this can cause for everyone. Parents,
you are appreciated for your supporting your student in all of his or her band
activities. Thank you parents for all that you do and for following the EPMS
Band guidelines!
Band class meets three times weekly during the school day. ALL after school rehearsals (except percussion and flags) are 4:00-5:15pm. The flag and percussion practice days and times are still being finalized.
The Band Booster Organization is organized to financially support the band program and to promote the activities of the band. The band program could not exist or function properly without parental support. Parents and interested friends are urged to attend meetings, events, performances, and to lend their support. Meeting schedules will be announced via the band calendar dates. We need your help. Please contact the band director if you are interested in serving on the band booster board.
Each nine weeks grade will be an average of the following:
Daily participation, class preparation, and extra concert rehearsals after school: Students must exhibit a cooperative attitude, practice every day at home for 25 minutes, and have the proper materials for class (practiced instruments in good playing condition, reed, music, pencil, etc.). Next, students should continually exhibit improvement in assignments and music fundamentals, such as scales, tone quality, proper breathing, proper posture, etc. At all times, band students must follow classroom rules (no chewing gum, etc.). To keep this program successful, every student is expected to exhibit respect for the band director, fellow students, school and personal property, student leaders, etc.
*Note: If a student’s instrument
needs repair, the student MUST bring a signed note from
his/her parents stating the situation for EVERY
class the instrument is being repaired. If a woodwind or brass player needs to be excused
from performing in class (dental, sore throat, etc.), the same procedure
applies. The student is still expected
to bring all materials (including the instrument) to class. A signed parent note must be presented for
each day an instrument is actually in the shop. Only 2 repair notes are accepted per nine week period (a note per
class period without the instrument).
Practice Sheets: Students must practice at least 25 minutes daily. This year students will regularly turn in completed practice sheets documenting what they practiced, how long they practiced, and other details. Parents will be required to sign the practice sheets verifying that your student did indeed practice daily as listed on the practice sheet. These sheets will be an important part of the student’s grade and also important to the success of the band. Students can possibly be asked to perform the playing exercises that they specified on the practice sheets. This will help hold them accountable for their daily practice encouraging musical success as an individual and as a vital member of the E.P.M.S. Band.
Playing Test: Students are given a minimum of one-week notice prior to each assigned test. If a student is absent on the assigned test day, it is the responsibility of the student to arrange a make-up test with the band director.
Performance Preparation and Participation: Students are expected to be prompt in arrival, have all needed materials, be neatly dressed, have positive and appropriate behavior and attitude, and to perform to their best potential. A doctor’s note is required to excuse a missed performance. There are at least 2 concerts throughout the year.
Academic grades will be different this year. Therefore students can receive the following grades based on the above expectations:
A = 94 - 100
B = 86 - 93
C = 77 - 85
D = 70 - 76
F = 69 or below
Conduct grades depend on whether students have any conduct “checks” for the nine weeks.
No checks = E
1 check = G
2 checks = S
3-4 checks = N (detention)
5 checks = U
Conduct checks are given after a warning has been given, and can be for excessive talking, playing the instrument during quiet time, or other classroom disruptions. (See student handbook for further actions.) Remember: Students who consistently do their BEST at all times in all areas can be successful in both their academic and their conduct grades. Students earn grades; they are not given.
BAND DATES TO REMEMBER FOR THE 2005-2006
SCHOOL YEAR
Important band dates are being included in the handbook so that may put them on your calendars now. Please understand that some practices, times, or dates can change due to circumstances out of my control. However, you will be given as much notice as possible when I need to make any changes. Please remember that marching band practices occur during the fall on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Mondays as needed. Also, during the second semester, the Concert Band will meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, and/or Thursdays until Concert Festival. The marching band and concert band practices are not listed on the next page. However, those reoccurring daily practices will appear on the monthly calendars. Finally, after school concert rehearsals are already included for the year for each grade. These after school concert rehearsals are required for every band member to prepare for the concerts. Please make a note of these important band dates. Students stating that they didn’t know about the practices, concerts, etc. will not be accepted as excuses. We want them to learn to manage their time and prioritize their scheduled events on the calendar. Thank you!
